Author Comparison (9.17.2017)

    My position on what it means to be an American I feel follows along with the idea behind I Hear America Singing by Walt Whitman and America, I Sing Back by Allison Adelle Hedge Coke. They both talk about how America was built on the work and dedication to making a better life for those who first start migrating to the U.S. 

   The United States to me is a wonderful place to be, while we don't have some freedoms like the freedom Germany has to have Autobahns, we should consider ourselves lucky to be where we live. Our country was built on hard work and dedication to making a better life for ourselves and those after us. Unfortunately it was also built on a lot of unfortunate and in today's standards, disgraceful ways of living and being towards others. It was built on hatred, disrespect and mistreatment of many people. Our ancestors all Immigrated in at some point in time and were all risking what they had to hopefully make a better life for the future generations to come. 

   I feel there are multiple pieces of evidence to prove what I am saying, like in I Hear America Singing when Walt Whitman writes " I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear," makes me think how we all come from different places and are all different, yet still alike. Or how in the end it says, "Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs," makes me think how everyone puts in hard work and dedication to shape their future into the life they came looking for in the U.S. And in America, I Sing Back I feel it talks again about the hard work and dedication to building a good life for future generations to come through lyrics like, "My song helped her stand, held her hand for first steps," meaning they built America from the ground up and held it through baby steps. And finally through lyrics like, "When she grows far past her self-considered purpose," in my opinion is saying when America finally gets to that point in its journey to be what it was destined to be that it keeps going and growing to better itself for future generations on and on until time or America ends. 

   In conclusion to this, the choice of words like varied; meaning- characterized by or exhibiting variety; and word choice like "held her hand," showed that through the different work lives and the roles/parts everyone played to shape America, it has become what it is today. This is what I have gathered from the readings.

Daisy In Relation to Gatsby

   For Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan is many things. She is a reminder of the past, a past love. She is the so to speak "apple of his eye," in a way. Although she is in a way much like Gatsby in wanting to be wealthy for the sake of materialism. They both are very realistic, so in a way I can imagine it's one of those relationships where it seems like more than it really is.   Gatsby merely is in love with the idea of Daisy and what she stands for. She is very materialistic and goes for money in order to fulfill her materialistic needs. On her end she may see Gatsby as a way to get back at her husband Tom for the affairs he has been having, but Gatsby seems to have some respect for the fact that she is with Tom, considering the fact that Pammy is the daughter of the two.

The Great Gatsby; Chapters 1-2 Blog Post

   Daisy Buchanan. She is the wife to Tom Buchanan, cousin of Nick Carraway, and romantic interest of Jay Gatsby who "happens" to live across the bay from the Buchanan residence. Daisy is married to Tom, but is mostly enrapturing him for the purpose of being happy by using his money. In chapter 2, Myrtle Wilson, Tom's "woman of the moment," as it can be said, brings up Daisy to Tom multiple times, in what to Tom would be a rather annoying and childish manner.   My opinion of Daisy is that she is the girl who was meant for the life opposing the life that she was born into. She has her way of getting what she wants, while on the surface seeming innocent in a way, as well as, very kind and outgoing.   I feel as though Myrtle is another example of one born into the life opposing the life she wants, and personally is a distractor, side fling for Tom. Wasteland Documentary

 This blogpost is going to be an analysis of the Wasteland Documentary I watched for english class. In this blogpost the objectives are to describe the context of the piece, talk about the artist's purpose for the art, and analyze the story and the work.    This is an artist from New York, who goes to Brazil and collects recyclables from scavengers in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and turns them into art. He does this in effort to "change the lives of the people, with the same material that they deal with everyday," (Vik Muniz). His next plans include working with garbage. The idea is to " [take] people away... from where they are, {to show} them another world, another place," and to see how it affects them and changes them.
